Background of the Study

The psychological well-being of patients is a crucial component of holistic healthcare, influencing recovery rates, treatment adherence, and overall patient satisfaction. Clinical nursing care extends beyond physical health interventions to include emotional and psychological support that contributes to patients’ overall well-being (Smith et al., 2023). Nurses are often the primary caregivers in healthcare settings, and their interactions with patients play a significant role in shaping patients’ mental health outcomes. Compassionate nursing care, effective communication, and emotional support have been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression among patients (Johnson et al., 2024).

In Nigeria, where mental health support in hospitals is often inadequate, clinical nursing care remains one of the primary sources of psychological comfort for patients. Bauchi State, a region with a growing population and diverse healthcare needs, has numerous healthcare facilities where patients face significant psychological distress due to illness, financial constraints, and inadequate social support (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Nurses in these hospitals play a pivotal role in addressing the psychological needs of patients through counseling, empathy, and personalized care.

However, despite the acknowledged importance of psychological support in nursing care, little research has been conducted in Nigeria on the specific impact of clinical nursing care on patients’ psychological well-being. This study aims to examine the role of clinical nursing care in improving patients' mental health outcomes in Bauchi State hospitals, providing evidence-based recommendations for enhancing patient-centered care.

Statement of the Problem

Psychological distress among patients has been linked to poor treatment adherence, longer hospital stays, and decreased recovery rates (Nelson et al., 2024). However, in many Nigerian hospitals, including those in Bauchi State, psychological well-being is often overlooked in favor of physical health outcomes. Nurses are expected to provide emotional support, yet due to workload pressures, inadequate training, and systemic healthcare challenges, this aspect of care is often insufficient (Hassan & Garba, 2025).

Without adequate psychological support, patients may experience increased anxiety, depression, and fear, which can negatively impact their overall recovery. The lack of structured psychological care within clinical nursing in Bauchi State hospitals highlights the need for a study that evaluates the effects of nursing interventions on patient mental health.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of clinical nursing care in improving the psychological well-being of patients in Bauchi State.

2. To examine the relationship between nursing care quality and patient mental health outcomes.

3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in providing psychological support to patients in Bauchi State hospitals.

Research Questions

1. How does clinical nursing care influence the psychological well-being of patients in Bauchi State?

2. What is the relationship between the quality of nursing care and patient mental health outcomes?

3. What challenges do nurses face in providing psychological support to patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between clinical nursing care and patient psychological well-being.

2. Higher-quality nursing care is associated with better mental health outcomes in patients.

3. Nurses in Bauchi State face significant challenges in providing adequate psychological support to patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on selected hospitals in Bauchi State, evaluating the impact of nursing care on the psychological well-being of patients. The study will exclude pediatric and psychiatric units to focus on general hospital patients. Potential limitations include the difficulty in measuring psychological well-being objectively and potential bias in self-reported data from patients.
